Over one hundred Italian and German designers and creatives took part on 29th May 2019 at the Italian Embassy in Berlin, in the presence of Ambassador Luigi Mattiolo, for an international conference on design and sustainability entitled “Design for Sustainability: bridging Italian and German creativity for sustainable development” on the opening day of the European Sustainable Development Week. The conference was an opportunity to discuss about sustainability issues, not only from the point of view of product design but also from the point of view of optimizing production processes and exploring new methods of production, distribution and collaboration between the various operators in the sector.

At the round table, chaired by Luisa Bocchietto, President of the World Design Organization, and Angelika Müller, publisher of the German magazine HOME, there were also five personalities from the academic world and from Italian design companies, including Monica Pedrali, CEO of Pedrali, an Italian company that has always paid attention to environmental sustainability during every stage of the production chain.

The conference was coupled with an exhibition of Italian sustainable design objects, curated by Luisa Bocchietto, useful to illustrate the different approaches to sustainability in the field of Italian design. Among the industrial design products was also Frida chair, designed by Odo Fioravanti for Pedrali. First launched in 2008 at the XXXII edition of Promosedia, Frida won the Top Chair Residential award in 2008 and was selected by the ADI Design Index in 2009. In 2011, Frida won the XXII Compasso d’Oro ADI, the oldest and most influential international design award, for its "simple sculptural beauty". Extremely light and resistant, in solid oak structure, in the year of its presentation Frida explored new possibilities in the field of woodworking. The most extraordinary feature is the superposition of a three-dimensional shell on a solid wood frame. The result is a sturdy yet extremely cosy chair characterized by lightness and resistance.

One of the two protagonists is Tribeca by CMP Design, the outdoor seating family collection that takes us back in time with a modern reinterpretation of classic Sixties patio chairs made from steel and woven material. Handcrafted with the highest attention to detail, this chair is incredibly soft and comfortable, and puts a contemporary twist on tradition with cutting-edge design and quality. The alternation of the strings gives rhythm and visual opening, by making the seating light, dynamic and airy.

Remind is the innovative polypropylene armchair designed by Eugeni Quitllet in which each element is conceived to ensure total comfort and cosiness, thanks to its functionality and versatility, it perfectly fits into both outdoor and indoor spaces such as terraces or the backyard of a bistro. While evoking the soft sinuous curves of wooden chairs from the late nineteenth century, Remind’s organic silhouette recalls "something never seen before”, a universal shape able to fit into any space and style of decor. The seat, the backrest and the breathable texture make it airy and even lighter.

An important place is also reserved to upholstered, refined and extremely comfortable collections. Sinuous and soft forms characterize Ester armchair, designed by Patrick Jouin for the restaurants of the starred-chef Alain Ducasse. The attention to details of the die-casted aluminium legs and the absolute comfort guaranteed by a seat made of polyurethane foam with elastic belts, contribute to make restaurants and hotel, which are a landmark within the international panorama, even more welcoming. Ester furnishes unique and high-level restaurants, such as the LAGO Restaurant, overlooking the legendary fountains of the Bellagio Resort & Casinò in Las Vegas. Or even the contemporary café ore – Ducasse au château de Versailles, inside the ancient royal residence of Versailles, just outside Paris. Not to forget the historic Auberge de l’Ill of the Hotel Des Berges in Alsace, one of the ancient five-star hotel in Europe.

Vic collection of chairs, armchairs and barstools by Patrick Norguet, with its elegant and the minimal outline, comes from the combination of different materials that highlight a pure and minimal design. The resulting opening provides the armchair with lightness and eases its handling. The back lifts up from the seat while remaining tied only at the ends. This seating collection has been chosen for prestigious projects such as the Twins Garden restaurant in Moscow, identified among the best 100 restaurants in the world according to The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. And yet, Vic is one of the main furnishings of the Okko Hotel chain, both in Paris and Strasbourg. But it also characterises iconic spaces of the Italian history, such as the famous Terrazza Martini in the centre of Milan.

Ergonomic and elegant shapes are the elements that characterise Jazz armchair and barstool. A perfect balance of proportions and thicknesses give life to a comfortable collection in the curved backrest is supported by a light steel structure. Jazz collections furnishes the DoubleTree by Hilton Turin Lingotto, the hotel with a contemporary style is placed inside the historic, former FIAT factory that tells, with its own structure, a piece of history of the city of Turin. This collection is also located within the charming Caffè Fernanda, in the famous Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, where guests can relax sipping a drink while admiring Francesco Hayez’s famous Kiss.

To complete the lounge area, Babila armchairs and barstools with backrest, designed by Odo Fioravanti, a collection that is able to move along tradition and innovation with great agility, whose strength is its simplicity and immediacy, to recall a timeless shape, Elliot tables, by Patrick Jouin, with their elegant silhouette, and Fluxo tables, by Luca Casini, with clean and minimalist lines.

SOUL OUTDOOR
Pure creativity
Design Eugeni Quitllet

Soul Outdoor is a new, special evolution of the original version made in bent wood  and launched by Eugeni Quitllet last year. The inspiration is the same that the Catalan designer defines as “a link between the concrete and the abstract, between the real world and that of dreams, between past and future... the unspoiled state of creation”.  An armchair able to express an idea of uncontaminated and pure creativity, defined by its soul.

A curved aluminium tubular frame, with classical shapes but solid proportions, clasps an ergonomic seat in shaped teak slats, almost like an embrace. The contrast between the two outdoor materials and the aesthetic result of the aluminium shininess make this armchair innovative and original. The lines of Soul Outdoor are accentuated by the fluidity of aluminium, which ensures strength and lightness, while presenting a strong visual impact...

Italian bohème
CMP Design

Designed by CMP Design, the name of this collection was inspired by Bar Jamaica in Milan's Via Brera, a legendary hub for intellectuals and artists in the twentieth century. The elegance of this chair speaks of an age in which art, technology and the imagination came together to give a human face to the aesthetics of machines, reimagining a peaceful world with creative sociability.

The result is a modernist collection which reworks the classic forms of the past with a contemporary edge by changing the ways in which traditional materials of bent plywood and tubular metal are used. In Jamaica, the warmth of the ash plywood used on the legs, with a variable tickness, and the shell, featuring a central lumbar support, is masterfully paired with the tubular steel backrest, which adds a subtle chromatic element and is more curved in the armchair version...
